[Comment]<\/strong><\/p><\/div>This is one of many examples of epigraphic epigrams from the 4th century that reveal significant similarities with classical elegies and their innovations, namely the alteration of the normal hexameter-pentameter stanzaic sequence, the adoption of metaphorical and allusive language, and greater formal refinement, thanks to the number and variety of rhetorical devices, with a particular preference for figures of sound. It is a conception of poetic creation as a game and virtuosity in the use of words: literary examples of this new way of composing elegies are frs 1 and 5 W. by Dionysius Calco or fr. 4 W. by Critias. In the case of CEG 482, the traditional sequence of the elegiac couplet was not adopted and, in terms of content, the image of becoming earth, which is traditional in itself (see Il. 7.99 \u03b1\u0313\u03bb\u03bb\u2019 \u03c5\u0314\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9\u0342\u03c2 \u03bc\u03b5\u0300\u03bd \u03c0\u03b1\u0301\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2 \u03c5\u0314\u0301\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u0300 \u03b3\u03b1\u03b9\u0342\u03b1 \u03b3\u03b5\u0301\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5, as well as Theogn. 878 \u1f10\u03b3\u1f7c \u03b4\u1f72 \u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u1f7c\u03bd \u03b3\u03b1\u1fd6\u03b1 \u03bc\u1f73\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u1fbf \u1f14\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9), is presented in parallel with that of being born from the earth thanks to the effective polytotum of the pentameter (\u03b3\u03b1\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 \/ \u03b3\u03b1\u1fd6\u03b1) and further alluded to by the metaphorical value of \u03b2\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03c9, perfectly calibrated to the image of sprouting that makes man a flower, without considering the more strictly philosophical aspect of the expression \u201cto be born from the earth and become earth\u201d (e.g. in Xenophanes, in fr. 27 D.-K. \u1f10\u03ba \u03b3\u03b1\u1f77\u03b7\u03c2 \u03b3\u1f70\u03c1 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03b3\u1fc6\u03bd \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03c4\u1fb7). A sophisticated rhetorical effect is also evident in line 1, in the sequence \u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u1fbf\u1f21\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 \u1f41\u03bc\u03bf\u1f75\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2, which emphasises, in the etymological figure and figurative use of \u1f21\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u1f77\u03b1, the youthful sharing of happy moments clearly indicated by \u1f21\u03b4\u1f73\u03b1 \u03c0\u03b1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2, an explicit reference that is recalled with strong alliteration by the opening word \u03b3\u03b1\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 of the following verse, thus denoting the syntactic and semantic unity of the initial couplet. The last verse stands alone, entirely occupied by the usual indication of the name, birthplace and origin of the deceased. It is therefore clear that the unusual metrical structure is justified by the semantic bipartition of the text.<\/p>\n<\/div>
