THE PROJECT

CENTURIES OF TRANSITION

The ‘Centuries of Transition’ project, carried out by four research units from four different Italian universities, investigates the main genres (epic, elegy, lyric, tragic and comic theater, carmina epigraphica) and contexts of Greek poetic production in the 4th century BC, along with musical praxis and theory. The goal is to help recover and identify personalities and phenomena, to grasp the lines of transformation, the conditions of historical production and circulation, and to give the poetry and music of this period their own specificity and role in the cultural dynamics of ancient Greece, between tradition and innovation.

The site, which is constantly being updated, is divided into five sections, each of which provides sample materials and points to more specific avenues for further study. The teaching section redirects users to video lectures conducted by researchers collaborating on the project and provides self-assessment materials for teachers and students.
